Revision Essay-3

Animal Dog

Dogs are known as “man’s best friend.” They are useful domestic animals, and there are both domesticated and feral varieties. Dogs perform many roles for us. For example, they work by hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, and companionship. Moreover, the dog is always loyal and faithful to his master. It never tries to leave his master even though his master is a poor man. A dog loves his master and stays with him until his death. A friend is one who is always ready to help when any problem happens. A dog is this kind of animal who always helps his master as a friend when his master faces trouble.
Dogs always try to be obedient to their masters. Even sometimes human can refuse to support each other or other animals, but the dog is so kind that they try to help their masters and also other animals. Dog feeds a baby monkey and helps that animal to relieve from illness. According to the daily mail, “I could not believe my eyes when I saw the monkey suckling Mintu (Female Dog), who did not seem to mind at all. Now the monkey lies down and sleeps with Mintu and the other puppies.' Mr. Reza said Mintu barks angrily if anyone disturbs the baby” (The baby monkey that’s as thirsty as a dog).  There are so many evidences in our world that the dog is a useful animal in our planet. Dogs work as a bodyguard at night time and help their masters in many ways in Bangladesh. As much as they help others, they do not get support from humans to live on the earth. Especially, American people care so much about dogs, but in some Asian countries dogs are beaten and never get food. Most people love animals, talk about animals, think about them, but they care less in reality. Now dogs are becoming extinct in Bangladesh, Nepal or Pakistan because of not caring about them at all.
Dogs can be you’re the best friend, and also they can give you best company in your lonely life. Most dogs are friendly, and they love human company. For example, dogs can wait for you by the door. Also, they can smile, and wag their tails. According to the whole dog journal, “If you like the outdoors and your dog enjoys water, stand-up paddle boarding (SUPing) is a fantastic way to spend time together. The added bonus is that it’s great exercise for both of you. Standing and balancing on the board while paddling seems to work every muscle in my body, and it seems to give my dog a good physical (and mental!) workout, too. If you tire of paddling, just plop yourself down on the board and take a break” (Whole Dog Journal). We have seen that American and European people take dogs with them when they go for physical exercise. It shows sympathy and caring for an animal. Also, it is helpful for people because they get company from dogs. Some people live as single; therefore, dogs can be their best friend.
Police also use dogs to catch the criminals and investigate bombs. For example, “Dogs were first used by the Connecticut State Police in the 1930's -- bloodhounds, used to sniff out the trails of fleeing suspects or missing people. A decade later, the department added Doberman pinschers as patrol dogs, to help guard against sabotage during World War II. But the experiment did not survive the war” (SLOCUM). It proves that dogs help people in many ways. If it is impossible for people to do it, dogs can help us to do the job and save us from harmful incidents. Even nowadays Bangladeshi police use dogs in tracing criminals and also bombs. Working in police squads, dogs prove that it is not just a domestic animal like a cow, but it also saves our human lives from criminals.
Dogs give company to his master every day when he goes for a walk. It is a true and faithful friend to us. Therefore, we can call him man’s best friend. We should care about dog how he cares about us. If we care about them, we will get many benefits from them.

Revision Essay -2

"There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck, and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down. I get positively angry with the impertinence of it and the everlastingness.  Up and down and sideways they crawl, and those absurd, unblinking eyes are everywhere.  There is one place where two breaths didn't match, and the eyes go all up and down the line, one a little higher than the other.”(THE YELLOW WALL-PARER~649-650)

In this passage from “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the narrator is beginning to see things again and again in the patterns of the "wallpaper”. Using the description of the pattern as “a broken neck” that lolls and “bulbous eyes”, the narrator gives an idea that the narrator is becoming the obsessed with the wallpaper by telling the images. It makes her worried. It also shows that the wallpaper disturbs the narrator and draws her into the paper, as if drawing her deeper into her mental illness. The narrator is beginning to see things in the paper.  Instead of just being an atrocious paper, she is starting to see things in the paper. Therefore, when her husband John tries to explain that there is no scary thing at home, she thinks about it again and again.  Moreover, she feels worried about “Ghost” or something which she always imagines at home.  All of these moments have happened   because of her depression and felling uncomfortable at new home.
The words “two bulbous eyes”   give us the idea that the wallpaper has human characteristics. She explains in this story that “two bulbous eyes” stare at her. It is all about narrator’s isolation.  She stays at home alone, and she wants someone to share her feelings. Therefore, she looks for human touch, but she is not able to talk with anyone because her husband works in the hospital. Therefore, she looks around the room and finds human characteristic in the “Wallpaper”. However, it seems that the narrator has problems in adjusting at new place, and also she is feeling mental disorder. However, her husband does not believe that she is sick. She says that “You see he does not believe I am sick!” (THE YELLOW WALL-PARER -647) It proves that her husband John is also responsible for her illness because he does not help her to get rid of a mental health disorder.
“Up and down and sideways they crawl, and those absurd, unblinking eyes are everywhere.”  Wherever the narrator looks, she finds something at home. The narrator describes her psychological situation at new home. For example, she feels herself observed by the ‘eyes’ on the wallpaper.  Then she starts to treat ‘imaginative’ observations as though they are real.  She says that the ‘unblinking eyes’  ‘crawl’ ‘everywhere’. Perhaps her imagination is causing her to begin to lose control of her thoughts. It happens because of her isolation. Her loneliness makes her crazy, and she finds something at home that is not real. Moreover, she does not get any mental support from her husband. For example, she describes “I don't like our room a bit.  I wanted one downstairs that opened on the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz  hangings!  but John would not hear of it.” (THE YELLOW WALL-PARER -648) Therefore, she becomes mentally depressed, and she finds something unreal because of her isolation.
It seems that the narrator always imagines something at home. It suggests that she may be mentally depressed. She always looks everywhere in the house and feels anxiety by imagining something in a wrong way.  She is mentally ill, and her husband never helps her. He believes that it is a woman’s illness and not an actual sickness. If it happens to anyone, we should think about treating the mentally ill.

What did I learn about writing this semester?

English is not an easy subject for me. I had taken some ESL classes before I took this course. When I took this course, I thought it would be a tough level for me. However, when I saw Professor Alexander, I felt less nervous because he was my teacher in my ESL class. When students needed help, he came to help and explained until students understood it. Moreover, I learned a lot from this class such as critical thinking, reading and writing. Also, I learned how to understand about writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others. I learned about making a “Blog” and how to post my essays on the “Blog”. Now I believe that I can write a better essay compared to the past.

Our first-class assignment was about Bryant park trip. I thought that it would be an easy essay. However, when I started to write, I found difficulty. This assignment was not as easy as I thought. Describing people and a pigeon was the hard job for me. I just wrote what information I gathered at Bryant Park. However, when the teacher made a comment on my essay, I understood what mistake I made. For example, he said that I should focus on the order in which I presented my details, and on the language I used in presenting them. Also, he mentioned about focusing on “timing” because this essay was partly about “timing".  Therefore, I wrote my article again, and I found that it was much better than the previous one.

Our second assignment was “unpacking a quotation”.  If I said honestly, it was the toughest essay I ever wrote in my life. However, the teacher gave us information about how to use quotation and paraphrase. For example, he told us that we had to give credit to the principal writer or source when we would use someone’s idea. Moreover, he gave details about differences between quotation and paraphrase. He said that a quotation is to “borrow language from another writer exact word and give credit by stating author’s name." Moreover, paraphrase is to “borrow ideas from another putting them in your own words.”   Also, he explained to us about exploring how literacy works. Therefore, I was able to write a quotation that was from “Yellow Wallpaper”. For example, I wrote about what the particular image of “two bulbous eyes” does. I explained that the wallpaper disturbs the narrator and draws her into the paper as if drawing her deeper into her mental illness.

Our third assignment was to research from college library website, and the topic was about any animal that we chose. It was tougher than the previous two essays. I did not know how to research in the library website. However, Professor Alexander helped me a lot how to find sources about my topic which I chose and how to write about it. Finally, I was able to find sources from the library website.  Also, I learned how to research and how to write an essay based on researching.

I would say that I learned a lot from this class “English 101". Mainly, I learned about academic essay writing.  Professor Alexander and other students also were helpful. They gave feedback on my writing, and I learned how I could develop my essay in a better way. I hope that I would do better in my next English class. Moreover, I am thankful for my professor and my classmates who always help me a lot.

(Revision Essay- 1)

Bryant Park Trip

A man was sitting on the step, leaning down and putting his elbows on his knees and moving his hands on his cheeks. Also, he is moving his body and looking people who are nearby to him. Sometimes he touches his teeth with his fingers. Then he keeps his hands in his pockets, and looking around. After a few moments, he is looking at girls who are sitting next to him and tries to talk with them, but they don’t respond. Then he stand ups and walks to the field. When he is walking, he is also looking at the sky. Finally, he is walking to the street and takes a bus.
A black guy wearing a blue shirt and black pants is on a chair and eating a sandwich. He also is drinking a Snapple while eating the sandwich. Then he takes out his money bag and starts to count money. He touches his phone and looks at something over the phone. Then he starts to laugh himself and looks around silently. He starts to eat his food quickly and starts to count money again. At that moment, he calls someone.  He starts to talk loudly and waving his hand. Finally, he stands up quickly and begins to walk as quickly as possible.
A young lady sits on the chair silently and reads on an 'i Pad'. She wears a red sweater, and blue pants. Her hair is very long and sometimes she touches her heads. Her sweater is moving because of wind, and she puts it back. Sometimes she moves her body and reads her electronic book. Then an old black man comes to her and starts to talk with her. She is giving answers when the old man asks her something. A few moments later, she talks more loudly with that guy until she takes her bag and walks away on the street.
A pigeon is sleeping. After 4 or 5 minutes, the pigeon begins to move and walk slowly. The feathers of its body are dirty with one of them broken. One of its legs is broken and it searching for food; pigeon only stops upon finding something to eat.  The pigeon meets with some other pigeons and begins to bit and peck at them. All pigeons do the same, and they have a fight breaks out. Then the original pigeon leaves far away from them and eats more food. It goes to the place where the sun is shining, and it sits on a broken table.

“Silence. In spite of himself, Will imagined that something large and bulky stopped in the trees and watched him. As he stood still his heart began to race. Never happened when he was drinking. Nothing bothered him after a few beers. Nothing. But now he felt the skin on his back crawling tight, and he ran his tongue over his lips. The night was crystal, sharp-edged. Whatever it was in the sumac began to shuffle away. "Neighbor dog," he said under his breath, and turned to go back to the house. He hated to give his back to it. Inside, he couldn't lose the feeling of threat. He had a list of numbers to call if things bothered him: Rocky, Billy, Paul. But these numbers were for a specific purpose. He was to phone if he wanted to drink.”

Prairie dogs thus differ markedly from other burrowing mammals, such as pocket gophers and moles, which people rarely see. Further, colonysites foster the growth of plants such as black nightshade, fetid marigold (also called prairie dog weed), pigweed, and scarlet globemallow— all of which are uncommon away from colony-sites. Finally, colony-sites attract fun-to-see animals such as American badgers, American bison, black-footed ferrets, bobcats, burrowing owls, coyotes, ferruginous hawks, golden eagles, mountain plovers, prairie falcons, pronghorn, and swift foxes."
